Am I a Failure
Are you wondering if you are a failure?
I have failed.
Let’s admit it we all have failed at something. But, let’s be clear, you are not and never will be a failure! I do not need to even know your full story to know that you are not a failure. Keep reading if you want to know what to do when you feel like a failure.
What is Failure
The definition of failure is the state of not meeting the desired outcome. So, for you to be considered a failure, it means that you need to be in a continued state of not meeting your desired outcomes.
Now, you may be thinking, “Correct! Things never go as I plan so that is exactly why I feel like a failure!”
Well, let me just reassure you, even though you have experienced some failure, you cannot just discount your whole existence and consider yourself a failure. I want to reassure you that if you have breath in your lungs, there is more for you and failure is not your destiny!
True failure is when you allow yourself to remain stuck where your last failure left you.
Friend, don’t let yourself stay stuck there.
Failing is Not Fatal
Over the course of 2 days I have seen more construction signs than I have in my entire life. They all had warnings of road work scheduled to take place. Many of them had a start date and an end date. It is always nice to know when you can expect for the construction to be done, especially if it changes your whole route.
What about in real life? Do you feel like one or more areas of your life is currently undergoing some change and you aren’t quite where you feel you should be so you feel like you are failing? Consider this. Instead of continuing to feel like a failure, switch up your thought process and start saying you are just under construction. Are wondering when the “work” will be done. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a sign giving you the end date of all the problems, losses, and challenges in your life? Unfortunately, life doesn’t always come with these kinds of answers. Regardless of that, I invite you to join me in declaring that you are not failing! When things do not go as planned, you can always go back to the drawing board and get back in the construction game!
When you walk by any construction site, it looks like a hot mess. Supplies, parts, dust, and damage are everywhere. I have never walked by a nice and neat construction site. You also have to admit that you have never walked by a construction site and thought, wow this is an absolute failure. Life can look a lot like a construction zone sometimes. You can feel like everything is a hot mess and nothing is the way you really want it to be. Know this, friend: this is normal!
How to Learn from Your Failures
It is cliché to say there is a lesson in every failure, but it’s still true. Do this when you feel like a failure:
4 Steps to take after failure
- Accept that things didn’t go as planned
- Admit that you are not an overall failure
- Analyze what went wrong or not according to the plan
- Acknowledge that you are going to keep going
- Aim for the next goal (get back in the game!)
Purpose Over Failure
God has given each of us a purpose and assignment in life. There will be times when we must undergo construction to fulfill this assignment. I think about how God created me to be a mother. Many times I really struggle in this area.
I feel like I try so hard to be a better mother to my kids; kinder and gentler, but I haven’t quite met that goal yet (inert major face palm emoji). Ultimately, I understand that God has given me challenge after challenge in parenting and it is all part of the construction to make me an even better parent.
The Best is Yet To Come
Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” I love this scripture because it gives us the reassurance that no matter how things look right now, they will be good in the end. Construction, including failure, is actually a sign of hope!
My father used to always say, “If it isn’t good, then it is not over yet”! How amazing to know that good is always on the other side of the construction! Hang in there. Keep working towards whatever it is that you were thinking about as you read this. The good is on the way!
